The key to successful camping is to make it as comfortable as possible for everyone involved. This includes your pets. Rather than hire a sitter to watch over your dogs while you’re away, why not bring them with you so you can enjoy the experience together?

To make the experience go as smoothly as possible, there are some things you’ll want to do. In fact, you may want to buy a second set of items that you already have in your home to keep with you at all times. The ‘camping set’ won’t be removed from your vehicle or RV so you’ll never be without the essentials for your dog.

Some of the things that you should bring with you while camping with pets include:

ID and Tags.

If your pet wanders away, you’ll have a much easier time finding him or her if the tag he or she is wearing states your name and phone number. Microchipping is an inexpensive, harmless procedure that ensures that your pet is identified quickly when found.

Short and Long Leashes.

You’re going to want to stick to your routine as much as possible to make it comfortable for your pet. Make sure that they get to walk whenever you do. Narrow the distance between your dog and danger by using the shorter leash when necessary.

A Food Bowl and Water Bowl.

Like you, they’ll work up an appetite while camping. Make sure that they have access to food, water, and treats.

A Comfortable Dog Bed.

Even if you’re sleeping in a tent, you want to allow enough room for your dog to sleep comfortably, too. Buy a small dog bed for this purpose as it will be a familiar reminder from home and help them rest better.

You don’t have to leave your dogs at home when camping. You’re welcome to bring them with you so you don’t have to make arrangements for someone to care for them while you’re away. Keep in mind, however, that like humans, they have needs. If they have access to the same comforts of home, your pets will be great companions in the Great Outdoors, too.
