When camping, your tent is your home away from home. And while camping is all about “roughing it” in nature, that doesn’t mean you should have to be uncomfortable. Here are a couple of things you can keep in mind while tent shopping that will help you narrow down your options so that you can find the perfect tent.

How much space do you need?

Think about how many people will typically be in your camping party. This could be limited to family, your friends, or just a couple of close camping buddies. You’re going to make sure that the tent you choose has room for your usual guests, but also extra room for extra people, in case your camping group grows. Even if it doesn’t, it can be nice to have a bit of extra room to stretch out. That being said, don’t buy a 10 person tent if your usual camping group is only a couple of people. You don’t want to spend a fortune if you don’t have to.

What weather will you encounter?

There are three types of tent you can buy based on what kind of weather you may encounter. A 3-season tent is lightweight, and is only meant to stand up to rain. These tents are the most common kind and are best for late spring, summer, and early fall. 3-4-season tents are able to stand up to light snow and heavier storms. These tents can be used in any season, but work especially well in early spring and late fall. 4-season tents are made for heavy duty weather mostly encountered by mountaineers. There tents are made to stand up to heavy snow and high winds. It is not recommended to use these tents during the summer because they are not made to be well ventilated.
