A campfire is great but not permitted at every campground. So, how do you cook the food you want to eat? Why not build a simple solar oven prior to leaving? You’ll have it available whenever you want to enjoy a simple snack such as a good old-fashioned s’more.
You can build a solar oven for cooking outdoors easily. You don’t even have to invest a lot of time or money to do it, either. Using some items that you have laying around your home, you can create a legitimate cooking source perfect for camping.
Supplies Needed to Build Your Own Solar Cooker
Here’s what you need to get started:
- A Cardboard Box
- Aluminum Foil
- Plastic Wrap
- A Pencil
- Black Paper
There’s a very good chance you have these supplies on hand so that means no additional expense for you!
Assembling the Oven
To assemble the solar oven, you’ll first need to line the box with black paper. If you have access to a pizza box, it’s one of the easiest ones to use because of its shape and unique lid. Next, cut a flap on the top of the box. You don’t want to cut all four sides because you want it to open and close easily.
Cover the opening under the flap with plastic wrap and use the tape to secure it. Then cover the lid flap with foil before propping the flap open with a pencil. You’ll then be ready to place your snacks in the solar oven to cook.
Using the Solar Oven for the First Time to Cook S’mores
For s’mores, it can take a couple of hours to melt the graham cracker and marshmallow. Chocolate, however, will melt right away. The hotter it is outside, the faster the food cooks so keep in mind what times of day are the sunniest.
