Who doesn’t love s’mores? The ooey gooey texture and sweet medley of graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows make the perfect treat at the end of a fun day of camping. S’mores are loved so much around the country that gourmet versions of the classic recipe are being shared all over the internet.
You, too, can step up your s’more game by bringing along some additional ingredients with you on your next camping trip. It will allow you to fully indulge your taste buds and create new traditions with your family and friends. Best of all, you’re likely to have at least one of the ingredients in your cupboard already.
Here are some things that make classic s’mores taste even better:
- Peanut Butter. Try swapping out regular graham crackers with chocolate-flavored ones. In place of chocolate, use your favorite brand of peanut butter. There are many varieties that comes in their own squeezable pouches which is convenient for campers.
- If milk chocolate isn’t your thing, grab some hazelnut spread instead. The light dusting of cocoa is reminiscent of the squares of chocolate you use for original s’mores recipes. Best of all, Nutella is already creamy so it melts easily.
- Fresh Fruit. Give s’mores a healthy spin by replacing the marshmallows with slices of bananas or strawberries. You can keep some in your cooler and slice them while someone else gets the fire ready. This is a great alternative ingredient for people who don’t like marshmallows or can’t eat them because they’re vegan.
Mental Floss notes that s’more flavors aren’t limited to campfire food, either. In anticipation of National S’mores Day, the website published an article containing a list of 11 s’more combinations that you likely hadn’t thought of before. How about S’mores Spaghetti, everyone?
The dessert is made out of chocolate and marshmallow spaghetti ‘noodles’ with sprinkled graham cracker ‘Parmesan’ across the top of it. If that’s too bizarre for your taste buds to try, why not make S’mores Stuffed French Toast? The ingredients melt to perfection making your next Sunday brunch one for the record books.
